Most states that allow a winery to ship wine directly to consumers also cap how much one recipient may receive. The cap is easy to stay under for a one-off order and easy to break with a wine club, because a club release sends wine to every member at once, on top of whatever each member has already ordered that period.
The table below gives the cap for every jurisdiction, word for word from the compliance guide, with the date each was verified against the statute or regulator. Read the whole cell: the qualifiers are the rule.
Who it counts. Some states cap each person, some each household, some each delivery address — and a few cap the shipper as well, across all its customers in the state. Two members at one address can share a single cap.
Over what period. Caps run per calendar month, per calendar year, per rolling twelve months, or per some other window. A calendar cap resets on a fixed date; a rolling one never fully resets.
In what unit. Cases, litres and gallons all appear, and where a state counts in cases it does not always define how big a case is. Convert the release to the state's own unit before you compare.
Across which shippers. In some states the cap is per shipper; in others it is the recipient's total from every winery that ships to them — a number no single winery can see in its own records.
Before a release ships, each member's order needs to be checked against the cap in their state, counting what that member — or that household or address — has already received in the current period. A member who is fine on their own can be over the cap once a housemate's shipment is counted.
Where the cap is aggregated across all shippers, your own order history is not enough to know whether a shipment fits. Where it applies to the shipper as a whole, a growing club in one state can approach a statewide ceiling.
A state that does not generally permit direct shipment is shown as such in the table. A volume cap listed for it does not mean you can ship there today — check the state page.
Compliance Vine LIVE checks cumulative volume on every order before fulfillment, alongside destination legality, licence status, age verification, dry jurisdictions and carrier coverage, and keeps a signed record of each decision.
